Storm Restoration Storm Response

Whether a storm is accompanied by lightning, wind, rain, snow or ice, NU’s operating companies are prepared to work as quickly as possible to make conditions safe in our communities and restore energy services to our customers.

We take preventative action through our vegetation management programs to trim back tree limbs and remove other vegetation that threaten to damage electric power lines and other equipment.  Before the need arises, we identify customers with a critical energy requirements such as hospitals, nursing homes, police and fire departments, and residents with life-sustaining medical equipment in their homes.

As a storm approaches, we monitor weather forecasts, we prepare our vehicles and equipment, and we may suspend routine activities so more personnel are available to respond to outages.

During a storm, we monitor outages and weather developments, and we send out repair crews when it is safe to do so.  We also urge our customers to stay away from downed or damaged power lines, or anything it may come in contact with, and to report such damage to local police or firefighters. See our Storm Kit for helpful information about planning for and coping with a storm.
